The theory is that the brain is attempting to block out the person's deceit, lie or doubt that it is seeing or indeed avoiding having to look at the person to whom they are lying to. Women generally use small eye rubbing gestures just below the eye, perhaps due to an upbringing of avoiding robust gestures or possibly to not smudge their make up. They may also avoid a person that is listening to them by looking up at the ceiling. Men usually rub their eyes in a vigorous fashion, and if the lie is a huge one they will tend to look away, normally towards the floor. |
